The Island of Barbana
On the eastern end of the Grado lagoon, easily reached by scheduled ferries, it is the Island of Barbana, that is well-known for the Marian shrine and for the peace that reigns there.
Every year on the first Sunday of July there is the ‘Perdòn di Barbana’: a folkloristic procession of boats decorated with flowers, garlands and flags that reaches the sanctuary of Barbana in recognition of the Madonna. The procession has its roots in the history of Grado, as a thank you for the end of the plague epidemic that struck the island in the thirteenth century.
